Alexandra Vinson
Assistant Professor of Learning Health Sciences, University of Michigan
Dr. Alexandra H. Vinson, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Learning Health Sciences at the University of Michigan. Her research explores the dynamic relationship between the medical profession and American society. In one line of research, Alexandra investigates how the medical profession adapts to its changing place in American society by reshaping medical training programs. Her early work in this area sought to understand the contemporary physician-patient relationship and how medical students are trained to take up the doctor role in patient interactions. Currently, Alexandra's research investigates changes in medical school admissions processes, including the adoption and use of situational judgment test scores as a new admissions metric, to understand the implications of these changes for building a diverse medical workforce. In another line of research and practice, Alexandra explores how the American healthcare system can be transformed by embracing robust multi-stakeholder engagement in healthcare improvement work.
The Learning Health System model was designed to unite discovery research and implementation to enable healthcare improvement through system- and individual-level interventions. In doing so, this model promises to manage the unfathomably large amount of information produced by research and collected in the electronic health record, turning this information into insights that allow collaborating stakeholders to improve health outcomes. The Learning Health System model has been steadily adopted by health systems over the past 18 years. This presentation will provide a critical appraisal of the model and its potential for transformative change that is informed by social science research and hands-on experience.:
