Sahra Gibbon

Professor of Medical Anthropology, International Studies, and Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Sahra Gibbon is a medical anthropologist whose work examines the interface between science, society and biomedicine, with over 10 years experience of leading cross disciplinary research projects and developing collaborations with colleagues in Brazil and other regions in Latin America. They have ongoing research interests in questions of embodiment, gender and health inequalities, including how this is currently being shaped by developments surrounding the Anthropocene. They convene the UK’s first ever MSc in Biosocial Medical Anthropology and am deeply committed to cross-disciplinary dialogue, exchange and engagement in, and beyond the university, concerning health, environments and biosocial approaches.

In their talk, Dr. Gibbon will reflect on their journey into interdisciplinary research, particularly as it relates to old and new fields of biosocial science and biosocial medical anthropology research, collaboration and teaching. Drawing on engagement in two projects currently  focused on longitudinal birth cohort studies and what has been described as ‘Anthropocene health’, Dr. Gibbon will highlight what they see as the vital necessity, opportunities but ongoing challenges of this work.
